About the Program
At Citadel, we encourage our team members to serve their communities as civic leaders. The Community Leaders program enables this support by providing our colleagues with concierge nonprofit board matching, governance training and cash grants.
Kathleen Durongpisitkul, who works in the Financial Reporting and Accounting Policy team at Citadel, joined the Board of Directors at Animal Haven in spring 2024 after enrolling in Citadel’s Community Leaders program.
A lifelong animal lover, Kathleen first got involved with Animal Haven in 2018, helping to clean, walk and care for dogs. Animal Haven is a nonprofit organization that finds homes for abandoned cats and dogs throughout the Tri-State area and provides behavior intervention when needed to improve chances of adoption. In addition to offering training and rehabilitation services, medical treatment and enrichment outings for long-term dog residents, Animal Haven also assists pet guardians in times of crisis, including domestic violence, housing emergencies and illness, and has taken on a record number of owner surrenders which have been increasing across all New York City animal shelters in recent months.
After Covid-19 forced people to stay home and socially distance themselves, Kathleen stepped up her volunteer work to include fostering dogs. Over the course of her seven years working with Animal Haven, she’s gotten to know the dedicated staff and live out the mission of the organization in helping to find these pets their forever homes.
As part of Kathleen’s board-service role, she participates on the governance committee and is currently helping the organization rewrite its bylaws. Once that’s complete, she hopes to join the finance committee to help implement controls and processes often found at bigger companies to help optimize operations.
“I’m so proud to be part of Citadel’s Community Leaders program,” said Kathleen. “Not only do I feel incredibly engaged in a cause I am passionate about, but Citadel also provides the financial and educational support to help me really make an impact in my board service.”
