We look for engineers who combine strong technical fundamentals with a problem-solving mindset. That includes data structures and algorithms, systems design and the ability to write clean, maintainable code. Just as important is how they approach problems—being curious, analytical and willing to challenge assumptions. At Citadel, there’s no single “right way” to do things, so we value people who ask, “Is there a better way?” and take ownership of driving improvements. Collaboration is also key. Engineers hold a strategic seat at the table, so it’s critical for them to be able to translate complex technical ideas into innovations with massive business impact.
Engineering interviews at Citadel are language-agnostic, although there are some roles that require specific expertise. We’re not dogmatic about any specific tech stack. What matters is your ability to apply reason to problems and choose the right tool for the job. Engineers work across a range of languages and technologies, depending on the problem space. In practice, a lot of our development happens in Python, Java and C++. We’re also leveraging AI and coding agents to accelerate development, so comfort working in evolving environments is valuable.
Engineers are deeply embedded in the business and play a central role in driving outcomes. They’re not working in isolation; they are a key partner in the decision-making process. They’re partnering with stakeholders to solve high-impact problems and build systems that directly support the firm’s success. For software engineers at Citadel, career progression is driven by impact rather than tenure, and titles are less important than the scope and complexity of the problems you’re solving. “Senior” isn’t about a fixed checklist. It typically reflects a combination of technical depth, ownership of meaningful problems and the ability to influence outcomes, whether through building systems, shaping architecture or mentoring others. Growth also takes on multiple shapes. You can go deeper in a specific domain, broaden your scope across systems or teams or move into new areas entirely. Instead of hierarchy, we prioritize real opportunities to evolve your role in ways that align with your strengths and interests as long as you’re creating impact.
We actively engage with the broader tech ecosystem. Engineers attend and speak at conferences (e.g., CppCon), contribute to technical discussions and stay close to cutting-edge developments. We also bring in external experts. Firms like OpenAI and Anthropic have done deep dives with our teams to help optimize solutions for our use cases. It’s a two-way exchange of ideas.
Hours can vary depending on the team and what you’re working on, but for engineers at Citadel, performance matters more than face time. We are an in-office culture, which fosters collaboration and learning. Yet we have flexibility to address other facets of our lives as needed. The interview process for software engineers is designed to evaluate your technical ability and how you think. You can expect a mix of coding, system design and problem-solving discussions. Preparation should focus on fundamentals: data structures, algorithms and designing scalable systems as well as clearly communicating your approach. We’re less focused on memorization and more interested in how you break down problems, make trade-offs and iterate toward solutions.
